This is a group for those curious about scribe palettes. Any photos of scribal palettes as well as discussion of materials and construction, differences over time or geography, and inscriptions is greatly appreciated. Feel free to highlight other items in the scribal kit, as well, including reed pens, inkwells, and papyrus burnishers. Let's help bring this often-overlooked type of object to light. After all, we wouldn't have been able to learn about the ancient Egyptians from the writings they left behind on papyri if a scribe had not held this tool in hand.
We wish to acknowledge the generous contributions of
Dr. Janice Kamrin, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and
Robert Wickland, Independent Scholar.
The Archaeology Photography Exchange gratefully acknowledges the contribution of the Egyptian Museum Cairo and the Egyptian Museum Cairo Registration, Documentation and Collection Management Department for allowing use of their Authorities lists in creating the menus used in APE’s fields. The original EMC lists have been edited to correspond to the photographs included in the web-site.
